Give proper credit by glomdi Give proper credit by glomdi

This annoys me so much. I come across devations and all they say is, "Copyrighted to respectful owners." That's not giving credit! That's just saying it's not yours. Which is okay, of course, but the proper way to give credit is to link to the place you got the stock from. I always make sure I give proper credit unless I'm not able, and I hope you do, too!

Edit: Psh, I submit a stamp with this message and then I always forget to put the credit for my Stamplates on every time I submit. -_- Hey, I usually realize it once I'm actually at my stamp's page! Lol.

Anyway, Stamplate is [link] by `stuck-in-suburbia

I uploaded a drawing that had someone else's design in it, and even though I gave proper credit to the artist, I still got flagged for it by another artist who threatened to report me for art theft
if I didn't change or delete it.

I didn't really ask permission to use the design from the artist, but I at least gave credit. Is that wrong? I didn't steal it if I gave credit.

That's stupid. I think if you just get inspired by something and give credit that's fine. If the artist asks you to take it down sure, but I wouldn't flag something that's not mine if it didn't violate rules.

IKR?

And this artist wasn't even the artist I borrowed it from.

I even told them that I gave credit, but they didn't seem to care.

Did you ask the artist? This was probably long ago so it won't help now but. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well this person did tell me that they would help me find a new design to use,
but can't get in touch with them at all.

This happened just recently, practically several weeks ago I believe.

Anyway, it doesn't even matter. I literally just read Deviantart's
copywrite policies, and it doesn't even matter if you give credit to
an artist, it's still an infringement on your part. Bottom line, either you
get permission to use it or nothing at all.

It is better that way I think, just in case the artist doesn't want it used. I don't know why you would want that but it's still your right. :/

anyway, i usually dont care about copyright, mostly because if hey dont want it being drawned by lesser artists then why they even care to upload it, its like creating a game and dont expecting that everyones tries to crack it off, or cheat in it.

shity goes towards a fan for this?

if you can't be bothered to find out/type out/link to
the name/website/publisher/etc
of who created whatever that you are about to use
then don't use it.

If you use someone's stock, you're supposed to give proper credit so that people will know if they want to use that stock, too, or stuff like that.

Listen.

When someone takes someone's else's art and claims it as their own, or even says "Oh I didn't draw this" is bad. But making images from a disney movie is OK. First of all, if you ask them, they'd probably beat your ass. And second, their company is huge -- they won't notice that stuff anyways. And third, everytime I post something up, I always say this.

"Again, I do NOT own this movie! I do not claim this as my own -- This is for entertainment purposes only, and everything belongs to Disney Studios. Again, I do not claim this movie as my own!" And THAT can be passed for proper credit instead of "i do not own dis pictur i dint dra it."

So whatever people say, it's just shit. Way to mess up again, DeviantArt. :ohmygod:

Sorry about my rant, I just had to say what I thought had to be said.

I think you misunderstood what I said. Either that or I didn't get what you said. I never said you shouldn't use stuff. I said Give proper credit.

I also don't really get why you said "Way to mess up again, DeviarntArt." That doesn't really make sense...

It's not really okay unless it's made trough a base or people have permission from the real artist, credting doesn't make it okay to use anyone's art. Check on Deviantart's Help and FaQ and type: Credit.

What I'm talking about, though, is if you use stock, have permission, or something like that. If it clearly says that you don't have to give credit, that's okay. But if you're just using someone's stock, then you should.

I've only used that term "copyrighted to respectful owners" on the genealogy/family tree stuff I'm working on for a bunch of people I know, simply because there's WAY too many people to list each and every character owner. xD

Anyway, I think I've heard just about every excuse from people like that at this point.
The typical "I gave credit!" when they actually didn't. The "I said I didn't draw it so it's okay" people, as Matto referred to.
Then the silly excuses like "Oh my (insert random family member/friend here) uploaded that and I didn't know about it".
The list goes on.

Sure it's lazy but saying a picture I drew of link and zelda is the copyright protected property of Nintendo / Shigeru Miyamoto is a little redundant when everyone knows who he is.

I'd give credit to less known artists and musicians before one that makes millions of dollars from a concept that's nearly 30 years old.

It is, but it's still necessary. You're supposed to give credit where credit is due.

You shouldn't just give credit to less known artists. Believe it or not, I have come across people who didn't know what Link or Zelda is.

I really wish DA would crackdown on these people who think all the images circulating the net are stock. Even a recent DD feature used an image that didn't belong to him and staff did nothing. Is it really that hard to be honest?! :crying:

It was a DD suggested for *RASIX-Designs which contained an image of a girl created by *Yayashin and `zemotion but no credit is given to them. I notified the ones who suggested and featured it, but I doubt anything will change.

And then there are the people who think giving credit for using someone else's work without permission makes it not art theft.

Both suck.
